How to Calculate Your Next Period

It’s easy to calculate your next period by doing a little bit of simple math. As long as you know the date of first day of your last period, you can calculate your next period by adding the average days in a normal menstrual cycle to that date.

Instructions:

1. Figure out when the first day of your last period was. This is very important because in a normal menstrual cycle, this is considered day 1, and if you don’t know this information you’ll have to wait until your next period comes along—then you can calculate the following period after that one. If you know when your last period started, move on to the next step.

2. Add 28 to 32 days to the first day of your last period, and make sure to count that day as one of the 28 to 32 days. For example, if the first day of your last period was on August 1st, your next period is due between August 28th and September 1st (28 to 32 days later).

3. Change the 28 to 32 day range to a longer or shorter range if you know that your period comes sooner or later than that on average. For example, if you know that your period comes on a 25 to 30 day cycle then you’d use those days to calculate the range. So in this example, if the first day of your last period was on August 1st, then your next period should occur between August 25th and August 30th (25 to 30 days later).

4. Use a calendar or draw a grid on a piece of paper if you’re having trouble conceptualizing this idea.  By doing this, you’ll be able to clearly see how the days are calculated instead of just trying to write it down or figure it out in your head.

5. Remember that women’s menstrual cycles aren’t an exact science, and that menstrual cycles can vary slightly from month to month. Although, we can make a general calculation of when a period will come, it is never 100% accurate.

Tips:

If you have any health questions regarding your period, menstrual cycle, or general health, make sure to ask your physician. There are many doctors that specialize in family planning and can teach your how to keep track of your cycle each month.
