How to Find HUD Apartments for Rent

Government subsidized apartments are available through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). In order to help people find HUD apartments for rent, HUD offers a free search tool on their website. This tool provides searchers with the most up-to-date HUD apartment information available online.

1. Open a new window with an internet browsing program and paste “hud.gov/apps/section8” into the address bar. Press the enter key to load the HUD apartment search tool.

2. Select your state from the drop-down menu and choose “Next.”

3. Choose your city, county, or zip code from the available drop-down menus. Select the apartment type and specify the number of bedrooms, then select the “Next” button.

4. Look through the list on the results page in order to find HUD apartments that interest you. The address is listed in the center column so you look can at a map in order to familiarize yourself with the area. You can also drive by in person to see what the apartments look like from the outside. This is a great way to see if you’re interested in a specific apartment.

5. Contact the rental offices of the apartments you’re interested in using the contact information listed on the left column. Most apartments have email and telephone contact information, so it’s a good idea to try both in order to maximize your chances of getting a response.

Tips:

If you’re having trouble locating HUD subsidized apartments, you can contact your local government human services agency and schedule an appointment with a case worker who can help you get started. Case workers are familiar with the process of obtaining HUD apartments and can help you thorough the entire process.
