How to Look at Local Mug Shots

Local mug shots are classified as public information in many states, and they are often made available to the public in order to increase awareness of criminal activity. These mug shots are available in online databases and at local police stations.

Instructions:

1. Gather as much information as possible about the person whose mug shot your want to see. At a minimum, you should have their full name (spelled correctly), and the city which they reside in.

2. Locate your local police department’s website using an internet search engine. Look through the website to see if they have an online database of mug shots. Many police departments offer online access to this information free of charge. If you can’t find this information on their website, move on to Step 3.

3. Visit your local police department and ask to look through their mug shot library. As long as they allow the public to view this information, you’ll be able to search for the mug shots you need. Some departments don’t allow this, and in that case you may not be able to find what you’re looking for.

Tips:

Some police departments may charge a small fee to obtain a copy of a person’s mug shot. These departments don’t allow the mug shorts to be viewed live and only provide copies. The fee is to cover the cost of paper and other miscellaneous administrative costs. The fee is usually less than ten dollars.
