How to Make an APA Works Cited Page

Many professors and instructors prefer their students to create an APA works cited page at the end of their papers. This page is generally the last page of the paper and is devoted to listing all of the sources used in the paper. It can also refer to sources that weren’t cited directly in the paper, but were used for research and contributed to the content or construction of the paper.


1. Open up a blank word processing document and begin formatting the margins to 1” all the way around the page. APA rules strictly state that this is the standard format for all pages typed in APA format.

2. Set the font size to 10 point, change the justification to “Center,” and make sure that italic or bold text is not selected. Type the word “References” at the top of the page. Change the justification to “Right” and type your name followed by the page number in the upper right hand corner. Change the justification back to “Left” and move the cursor down one line, creating an empty line of space between the heading and the first citation.

3. Format each citation with the author or authors last names in alphabetical order followed by a comma and a single letter abbreviation for their first name. If the text for the entire citation is more than one line you must indent each subsequent line one tab-space from the left margin. The first line is always flush to the left margin, but each line after that is indented one inch from the left margin.

4. Type the date that the work was published after the author’s name or names and then type a period. Hit the space bar once and then type the title of the work being cited. Type a period and one more space. Type the name of the publication that the work came from in italics. If it is a book or an independent piece, then this is not necessary. Type a period after this and one more space.

5. List the pages that contain the material being cited in parentheses. If the work being cited is an entire book or publication then this is not necessary. Type a period and a space after this. Finally, list the name of the publication company and type a period. Repeat this process for each citation.


APA rules change from time to time and it’s always a good idea to have an APA style book in order to know what the current rules are. Having and APA style book can also help you format less common citations.
