As time goes on, the cost of granite countertops continues to rise. The good news is—there are a number of ways to save money on the overall price of granite countertops, making new a new kitchen more affordable than ever.
Instructions:
1. Shop around for multiple contractors before settling on one. This is probably the most important and most overlooked point on saving money. Because many people are eager to get started with new countertops, they pick the first contractor and don’t look by. You can save as much as 50% just by doing your homework and getting free estimates from a number of contractors.
2. Do as much of the work yourself as possible. Even if you aren’t handy, removing things like molding and outlet covers can help. The less work the contractors have to do, the lower your bill will be.
3. Consider getting remnant slab of granite if you have a relatively small amount of countertop space. Granite remnants are left over from bigger jobs, and because they are smaller pieces and not suitable for larger jobs, their cost is dramatically reduced.
4. Look for sales and specials in local newspapers and billboards. Often times, contractors will list specials in local newspapers that offer 10% discounts to people who mention the ads. 10% can add up to quite a bit of savings, so it’s worth scanning your Sunday paper for special promotions.
5. Ask if the contractors offer a discount for placing a sign in your yard. Many contractors offer a small discount for homeowners who place a sign with the contractor’s name on it in their yard for a set period of time, usually a week or so.
Tips:
Don’t be afraid to negotiate on the prices while shopping around. If a granite countertop contractor wants your business, he or she will be open to discussing the numbers.
